Jean M. Russ
MAYVILLE – Jean M. Russ, 98, of Jackson Street, Mayville, died Saturday (Jan. 11, 2014), in her home.
She was born April 25, 1915, in Dunkirk, N.Y., the daughter of the late William and Mary Dempsey Madigan.
Jean had been the children’s librarian at the Dunkirk Free Library and later she had been the librarian at Bemus Point Central School, which became Maple Grove High School.
She was a member of St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church in Mayville, New York State Retired Teachers, American Association of Retired Teachers and the Mayville Senior Citizens.
Jean wrote the book “Dunkirk Guiding Light,” which was about the Dunkirk Lighthouse of which her grandfather was the lighthouse keeper. She enjoyed writing letters to her friends and family.
She is survived by two daughters: Polly (Dennis) Harris of Mayville, and Betty Steinbach of Mayville; two grandchildren: Lindsey (Brian) Miller of Falconer, and Mark Harris of Hamburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Russ, whom she married Aug. 14, 1948, in Lakewood, N.Y., and who died May 1, 2000; one daughter, Katherine Russ in 1968; and one brother, Robert Madigan.
The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 18, 2014), in St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church in Mayville. The Rev. Todd Remick will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the Freay Funeral Home, Mayville.
