Lakewood Library To Celebrate Roc Day Jan. 29

LAKEWOOD – Roc Day will be celebrated at Lakewood Memorial Library on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free basic spinning instruction and practice sessions will begin at 11 a.m. and noon.

In many European cultural traditions, women returned to their household duties on Roc Day – after the Twelve Days of Christmas. Women of all ages and levels of society would spend their evenings at the spinning wheel and would carry a drop spindle with them during the day.

Spinning was the only means of creating the threads needed for weaving fabric from raw wool, cotton or flax. Participants should gather in the Heritage Room at Lakewood Memorial Library, 12 W. Summit St., Lakewood, for demonstration, instruction and practice. Call 763-6234 for more information.
