SYRACUSE – After holding down the No. 2 spot in the New York State Sportswriters Association Class D boys basketball rankings in late December, the Sherman Wildcats have moved up the ladder to No. 1 in the latest poll, which was released Tuesday.

Coach Cory Emory’s team now stands at a perfect 7-0 on the year after picking up a close 63-58 non-league win over Randolph.

The Clymer Pirates remain in the No. 14 spot, and now stand at 4-3 after falling to West 2 Division opponent Panama, and picking up a tournament win over Pine Valley. Jamestown (3-3) is still among the honorable mention teams in Class AA. Undefeated Cardinal Hayes (8-0) is still at No. 1.

Olean (7-1) is at No. 3 in Class B following an impressive 87-71 victory over Greece Athena of Section 5. After dropping two games, Fredonia (4-2) has fallen from No. 14 in Class B to honorable mention.

Thanks to a 14-0 start to the season, Falconer’s wrestling team is ranked No. 7 in the small school poll. The Golden Falcons recently picked up a fourth-place finish at the Niagara Frontier Wrestling Officials Tournament at Niagara County Community College on their way to picking up the ranking. Fredonia wrestling sits nine spots behind the Golden Eagles at No. 16, thanks to a 9-4 record.

This week’s rankings for girls basketball have yet to be released.
