Gowanda Wins Pine Valley Tournament

SOUTH DAYTON – Only four players scored for Gowanda, but all of them were in double figures as the Panthers claimed the Pine Valley Boys Basketball Tournament title on Saturday.

Zach Stevens was the most valuable player with 17 points, including 14 in the first half, when the Panthers were behind by a 31-28 deficit en route to a 64-61 win over Chautauqua Lake.

Stevens was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Carter Benton, Kyle Maher, and Chandler Baker of Chautauqua Lake, Matt DeStevens of Clymer and Dylan Granger of Pine Valley.

Benton scored 13 points and Williams added 11 points in the second half when Gowanda rallied in the to defeat Chautauqua Lake.

The top scorer for Gowanda (7-2) was Benton with 18 points, Williams managed 16 points and Brendon Geiger had 13 points.

Chautauqua Lake, with Mayer hitting three 3s in the final stanza, pulled within with three points in the late going. A one-and-one was missed by Gowanda with 10 seconds left, however, a late-second 3-point attempt failed to hit the mark.

Mayer finished with 20 points with five 3s, Ian Clute 11 points and Baker with 10 for CL (3-5). Clute had a fine all-around game with 12 rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks while Baker contributed five rebounds.

What hurt the Thunderbirds was they hit only 44 percent from the foul line (7-of-15) and 39 percent from the field.

In the consolation matchup, the Clymer Pirates (0-2, 4-3) moved past host Pine Valley (1-5), 61-53, thanks to big performances from Matt DeStevens and Jake Wiggers.

DeStevens put up a team-high 22 points in the victory.

Wiggers followed closely behind with 21 from the floor, and added seven steals as well.

Mitch Einink also chipped in 10 points, six boards and five steals for the winners.

Dylan Granger had 18 points for Pine Valley.

Jake Wilcox notched eight boards and six points on three field goals in the loss.
