Richard V. “Dick” Roos

Richard V. “Dick” Roos, 84, of Jamestown, passed away Friday (Jan. 3, 2014) in WCA Hospital.

A lifelong area resident, he was born April 13, 1929, the son of the late Oscar Roos and Elsie Bredberg Roos Griffin.

Dick attended Jamestown High School and served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II from 1944-46.

In earlier years Dick had numerous jobs and prior to retirement he was a self-employed carpet installer for 40 years.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting, bingo, cooking, crosswords and roller skating. Dick was a good storyteller who was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling, especially his fishing and hunting trip to Alaska in 2004, to visit his daughter Heidi and her family.

Dick was a member of the War Vets Recreation Club, IOOF of Ellington, Cassadaga Country Club and Chautauqua Golf Club.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Walker Roos, whom he married June 27, 1987, in the town of Busti; a son, Richard D. (Linda) Roos; five daughters: Pamela (Doug) Merrill, Deborah (Gary) Schauman, Susan Donnelly, Heidi (Tim) Stage and Hillary (Dennis) Rhoades; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; a stepson, Jim (Lori) Walker; two step-grandchildren; and four step- great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, who died Jan. 26, 1998; his father in 1962; by his brothers: Raymond Roos in 2002 and Robert Roos in 2004, by his sister, Harriett Roos Mescall in 2011; a grand-daughter, Hope Schauman in 1995; his stepfather, Lester Griffin; and his step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Joyce and Gordon Skinner in 2013.

The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the Falconer Funeral Home. The Rev. Roy Ferguson, pastor of Busti Church of God, will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
