Students at Bethel Baptist Christian Academy recently had an opportunity to spend most of the day with one of their country’s veterans.
Sgt. 1st Class James Weaver is currently serving in the Army National Guard and has served in places like Afghanistan and Kuwait. He currently serves in the armories in Buffalo and Jamestown and lives locally with his wife and children.
Last Christmas, Weaver’s children had a huge, emotional surprise when they unwrapped a huge box that contained their father, who had been serving overseas in Kuwait for a year. His family is glad to have him safely back home with them this Christmas and beam with pride any time they get to share how Weaver has served.
Staff at B.B.C.A., a kindergarten through 12th-grade Christian school, wanted their students to have a better understanding of what the military has done and continues to do. The whole school was excited to meet with Weaver and explore the military Hummer he brought with him. Students from every class bombarded him with questions from where he has served, how does it feels to be so far from his family for so long when out in the field, to what is his favorite weapon. Weaver answered every question skillfully and was able to open the student’s eyes up to the sacrifice that military men and women make every day to protect freedom. In a time when many children are not sure what a veteran is and think the military is more like a detached video game, Bethel’s students had opportunity to have a much more accurate and real understanding of who our veterans and military are.
Students at B.B.C.A. gathered a variety of items for soldiers who will be serving overseas during this holiday season, which will be distributed through the Blue Star Mothers 2013 Christmas Care Package Project. Students enjoyed making a large number of Christmas cards that will be sent out to our serving soldiers. They want to make sure our military knows that they are appreciated for the sacrifice that they give for our freedoms, that they are not forgotten this holiday season and that they are in our prayers.
