George Schenk, 82, of 255 West End Drive, Punta Gorda, Fla., formerly of Findley Lake, N.Y., passed away at home on Dec. 9, 2013.
He was born Oct. 10, 1931, in Erie, Pa., the son of the late Carl and Dorothy Kephart Schenk.
George was a 1949 graduate of Wesleyville High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951, and served in Korea. He was later stationed in Ft. Worth, Texas, where he met and married the former Joyce Hertell in February 1956. The couple eventually moved back to Erie, to start their family.
He worked at Bliley Electric in Erie, before purchasing the Findley Lake Hardware Store in 1969. For eight years, he and his family managed the hardware store, during which time he purchased the site of the current building at Route 426 and School Street, moving to that location in 1973. After selling the business in 1978, he worked at Elgin Electronics, Portage Hill Apartments and Mayville Hardware until retiring. Upon retirement, he became a snowbird and worked at Mayville Hard ware (NY), Sanderhoff’s Hardware, Isles Hardware and Morton’s Hardware (Fla).
He was a volunteer with the Findley Lake Fire Department, serving in the position of assistant chief at one time. He had also been a volunteer with the Sea Lion Project on Chautauqua Lake, where he served as second mate.
George is survived by his wife, Joyce Schenk; three children: Tim Schenk at home, Becky Querreveld (Randy) of Sarasota, Fla., and Sherri Schenk Hamilton (Jack) of Findley Lake, N.Y.: two grandchildren; Ryan and Rachel Querreveld of Sarasota. He is also survived by two sisters: Vera Price (Wayne) of Michigan, and Fannie Rysz of Florida; a brother, David Schenk (Rose) of Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and two brothers.
George was often featured in his wife Joyce’s weekly column that appears in the Mayville Sentinel New ”Moseying Along.”
