Excellence From Foul Line Sends Bears Past Cougars

SINCLAIRVILLE – Excellent foul shooting carried Frewsburg-Falconer (3-1) past Cassadaga Valley (0-2), 73-64, in non-league boys basketball on Wednesday night.

Although outshot from the field, the winners hit 21-of-26 attempts from the charity stripe while Cassadaga Valley was just 6-of-10.

Frewsburg-Falconer made 13-of-17 free throws to stave off a 26-point fourth quarter by the Cougars. Overall, Mitch Carter was 6-of-7 from the charity stripe, and Josh Nelson and Peterson both went 6-of-8.

Petersen sank 20 points, Carter 18 and Nelson 17 in the winning attack.

Cody Johnson paced the Cougars with 23 points and Mike Lancaster added 16 points, including 13 in the final quarter. Johnson also had eight points in the final chapter and finished with 13 rebounds.

PINE VALLEY HOLDS ON

SOUTH DAYTON – Trailing, 50-40, the Brocton Bulldogs scored seven points in the final two minutes, but in the end, it was not enough as the Pine Valley Panthers escaped with a 50-47 victory Tuesday.

The Bulldogs held a 26-21 halftime edge, but the Panthers tied the score 34-all heading into the final period.

“I was real happy with our defensive intensity in the second half,” Pine Valley coach Mark Mansfield said. “I could do without that final two minutes, though.”

In that final two minutes, Brocton’s Macalum Buchanan and Aaron Riforgiato each hit 3-pointers to cut the deficit to three points.

The Panthers were led by Jake Wilcox’s 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Dylan Granger contributed in the win with 16 points, three steals and four assists. Nine of his points came in the decisive fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs were led by Aaron Riforgiato’s 12 points and seven rebounds. Malcolm Buchanan also had 12 points while Bryen Graves had 10 rebounds in a losing effort.
