Reed Nets 33, But JCC?Falls To Roxbury

BOSTON, Mass. -Foul shooting down the stretch carried Roxbury Community College past Jamestown Community College in NJCAA Division III women’s basketball game on Friday night.

The hosts made 11-of-12 attempts from the foul line after JCC cut the lead to eight points with 1:22 remaining en route to an 85-76 defeat.

The Jayhawks got within five points with 4 minutes left, but a couple of missed layups, a turnover and missing the front end of a 1-and-1 led to their downfall.

Freshman Elle Reed was outstanding for JCC by scoring 33 points, including 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. She made five 3-pointers as well.

Three-pointers by Reed and Taylor Storer enabled JCC to go on a 10-4 run to slice the halftime deficit to 35-32.

In the second half, Storer went to bench with foul trouble and Roxbury upped its lead to 10 points with 15 minutes left. Storer scored 12 of her 16 points after intermission.

”For us to travel 8 hours, get off the bus and go and compete against a team that is very strong … is a credit to them,” JCC coach George Sisson said.

JCC saw Roxbury at the Columbus State Tournament and knew what it was up against with three sophomores destined for scholarships at four-year schools. Zakiya Mason sank 25 points, Amanda Hoover, who is headed to South Alabama, added 20 and Lia Bass contributed 13.

Brook Draggett had 11 rebounds, Reed seven and Storer five for the Jayhawks, who also got 13 points and three rebounds from Akiah Luceus.

Besides the three scholarship players, Roxbury, which played just seven girls, received 10 points from Kelsey Mack and Katrina Matthews.

Jamestown, now 6-3, has a day of rest today before playing a noon game on Sunday against Bunker Hill CC in Boston.
