‘Anything Goes’

A stowaway aboard an ocean liner bound for London will attempt to win the love of an heiress on the stage of the Robert Lee Scharmann Theater beginning Friday.

A music theater interpretation of Broadway’s “Anything Goes” by the JCC Uncommoners is set to open at Jamestown Community College Friday at 8 p.m. The show will continue Saturday, Friday, Nov. 15, Saturday, Nov. 16, Friday, Nov. 22, and Saturday, Nov. 23, at 8 p.m. There will also be a 2 p.m. performance on Sunday, Nov. 17.

Set to the music and lyrics of Cole Porter, “Anything Goes” follows Billy Crocker, a stowaway in love with heiress Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Reno Sweeney, nightclub singer, and Moonface Martin, public enemy No. 13, will aid Billy on his quest to win Hope’s love.

According to Bob Schlick, coordinator of theater at JCC and director of the show, “Anything Goes” is a classic American musical with great music and lyrics.

“These songs are just so beautiful and a lot of fun – it’s something different for us to do,” Schlick said. “There’s quite a bit of dancing, and lighthearted comedy. I’m excited about the show because I think everyone will enjoy it. It’s family-friendly for the most part, and that’s also unusual for us because we usually do things that tend to be edgier.”

The show features local talent comprised of both JCC students and members of the community. JCC students featured in the cast include: Dwain Graham and Austin Schapp, of Randolph; Tyler Stimson and Sean Dudenhoeffer, of Falconer; Derek DeVlieger, of Lakewood; Jessica Hochstine, of Dunkirk; Jennie Cross, Bram Johnson and Chelsea Levesque, of Jamestown; and Courtney Young of Gowanda. The community members on the cast include: Don Hill, Daman Holland, Holly Weston, Donald “D.T.” Thomas, Teal Weatherley, Amie Adams, Caitlin Clark, Destiny Gates, Allison Brickey and Ritchie Hayes.

“We have a really nice cast that is very talented,” Schlick said. “We also have the orchestra on stage for a change. We have a small combo that we put right on stage to be part of the set.”

Porter’s tunes featured in the musical include: “You’re The Top,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “Friendship,” “I Get A Kick Out Of You,” Blow Gabriel, Blow,” “All Through The Night,” and “Anything Goes.”

“I think those who attend will be left with a good feeling about having had an entertaining night,” Schlick said. “Hopefully they’ll go home humming the songs because many of them are quite familiar.”

Presale tickets are $18 for premium seating, $15 for preferred and $10 for general. At the door, tickets are $20, $17 and $12, respectively. Tickets are available at the college’s box office by calling 338-1187 or online at www.campusstore.sunyjcc.edu.
