Randolph, MG/CL Will Meet For ‘D’ Title

RANDOLPH – It didn’t take Randolph long to show why it is the top-ranked Class D football team in the state Friday night.

Chris Doubek went around the end for a 72-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage and the Cardinals went on to post a 38-6 victory over Ellicottville-West Valley in a Section 6 Class D semifinal.

The win made it nine straight victories this season and 19 in a row over a two-year span for the Cardinals, who took a 30-0 lead at halftime

Randolph will now be matched up against Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake (7-1) in the championship game at 6 p.m. Friday at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park. In their first meeting, Randolph prevailed, 35-7.

After Doubek scored just 22 seconds into the game, Doubek scored from 8 yards and Devyn Nelsen took a pass from Mitchell Maycock for the conversion for a 16-0 spread with 7:11 left in the opening period.

Nelsen had earlier run in the conversion after Doubek’s first touchdown.

Maycock had a 2-yard touchdown run with 6:20 left in the second quarter followed by Doubek’s conversion run. Later, Maycock hit paydirt from 1-yard out with 3:03 showing.

The Cardinals scored once more in the third quarter when Lucas Brown went 18 yards to the end zone, which was set up by Doubek’s 38-yard punt return. Brown added the extra points.

Ellicottville-West Valley averted the shutout when Loren Smith scored from the 13 with 5:22 left in the fourth quarter.

Doubek wound up with 228 yards on 17 carries for the Cardinals, who had 278 yards rushing overall.

On defense, Nick Hettenbaugh had 10 tackles and an interception, Nelsen eight tackles and three assists, Doubek seven tackles and five assists, and Cody Oldro and Brown (sack) added six tackles apiece.

Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake (7-1) came alive in the fourth quarter and defeated visiting Portville (4-4), 21-6, in a semifinal game.

The Thunder Dragons were behind, 6-3, after three quarters, but rallied in the final period with three touchdowns to set up another meeting with undefeated Randolph (9-0) in the title game at 6 p.m. on Friday at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Mitchell Sandberg put the winners ahead with a 3-yard run followed by Graham Nelson scoring from the 5- and 47-yard lines.

The go-ahead touchdown was set up when quarterback Kyle Mayer completed a 37-yard pass to Jed Micek on third-and-8 to put the Thunder Dragons inside the 10. Later, Sandberg went over from the 3.

Portville had taken the lead in the first quarter at 6-3 when Ben Waugh went 9 yards into the end zone.

Earlier in the quarter, Riley Beaton hit a 29-yard field goal to give the Thunder Dragons a 3-0 edge.

Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake had 159 yards rushing with Ryan Miller gaining 110 yards in 22 attempts before coming out with a leg injury. Nelson finished with 55 yards on six attempts.

The linebacking crew for the Thunder Dragons did the defensive job with Sandberg making 15 tackles, Chandler Baker 12 and A.J. Hulton eight.
