Trojans, Cards Net Volleyball Victories

A year ago, Southwestern advanced to the Section 6 Class C volleyball semifinals.

They’ve done one round better in 2013.

Sparked by an all-around team effort, the fifth-seeded Lady Trojans moved to the title game by virtue of a 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 25-16 victory over No. 8 Allegany-Limestone on Friday night.

The victory advances Southwestern (15-6) to Monday’s championship match against No. 2 Eden. That contest will be held at 6 p.m., at Sweet Home High School.

”This group of girls want this so bad for themselves,” Lady Trojans coach Amanda Krakowiak said. ”That self-motivation is really pushing to excel.”

Maddy Alexander had four aces, 16 assists, seven kills and three blocks; Kara Schutte three aces, 18 assists and six kills; Sally Rudny two aces, 18 kills and five blocks; and Carlie Carlson two aces, six kills and one block for the winners.

”I think the biggest thing is these girls have such great team chemistry,” Krakowiak said. ”They all have the heart, desire and the want. They’re here for the long haul. That drive and determination they have is amazing, and they work very well together. That chemistry really can’t be broken.”

Allison Watson paced the Lady Gators (13-8) with 21 kills and one ace; Lauren Ruffner added 11 kills and three aces; and Mel Hudson collected 26 assists.
