Corbelli Takes Three Titles At State Open Senior Championships

Eighty-two-year-old lefty Sandy Corbelli (Greater Buffalo USBC) enjoyed a “super Sunday” on the lanes last weekend as he captured three titles at the 35th New York State Open Senior Championships at Jamestown Bowling Company.

Corbelli, a 171-average bowler, posted 651 scratch in Doubles and 609 scratch in Singles to place first in the Super Senior (75-and-over) Six-Game Combine, Super Senior Singles and Class A Doubles (with 71-year-old partner David Hearn).

“It was just one of those days; I can’t believe it,” Corbelli said. “The key was that I was able to pick my 7-pins. Usually, I miss a bunch of those.”

Corbelli’s efforts, along with a 1,465 scratch performance by Kevin Gray Sr. (Genesee Region USBC) in Class D (55-59) and a 299 game by Jeff Chambers (Lockport USBC) en route to a first-place finish in Class E (50-54) Doubles, highlighted action as the tournament drew to a close.

Gray registered 736 in Doubles and 729 in Singles to edge first-weekend leader Kevin Martin (Rochester USBC BA) by 17 pins in the Six-Game Combine category. Martin did hold on to capture the Class D Singles crown with 788.

Two bowlers placed first in two categories – Maresse Wager-Walawender (Auburn USBC WBA), in Class B Doubles and Singles, and Michael Kime (Rochester USBC BA), in Class E Singles and Six-Game Combine.

Combine champions in each age classification won paid entries to the USBC Senior Championships next July in Reno, Nev.

This year’s tournament drew 91 Doubles teams and 171 Singles – up from 87 and 168 in 2012 in Staten Island. Prize checks (1:5 cash in each event) will be mailed by Nov. 24.
