CCAA Tennis Shines At Sectionals
WILLIAMSVILLE – Representatives from the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association turned in fine efforts at the Section 6 tennis championships on Friday at the Village Glen Tennis Club.
Georgie Gens of Fredonia, seeded 15th, pulled off the upset of the day by knocking off top-seeded Gillian White of Depew, 6-1, 6-1.
Later, Gens beat Heidi Mueller of Southwestern, 6-1, 6-3, to set up a battle for third place against No. 3 Nicole Kozenski of Clarence. That match is scheduled for 3 p.m., today.
Mueller had advanced by prevailing over Brooke Sczymasiak of Lancaster, 6-1, 0-6, 6-2, before meeting Gens.
In doubles, fifth-seeded Rosemarie Mole and Emily Hair of Frewsburg beat Hannah Kiskar and Kaitlyn Budzich of Lancaster, 6-2, 7-6, but were defeated by fourth-seeded Linna and Oestreicher of Niagara Wheatfield, 7-5, 6-4.
Third-seeded Victoria Van Every and Elizabeth Rowan of Southwestern downed 14th-seeded Julia Daboni and Berkeley Kozach of Depew, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5, and lost to Robbins and Ringler of North Tonawanda, 6-4, 6-3.
Eighth-seeded Morgan Johnson of Southwestern emerged with a 6-1, 6-0 win over ninth-seeded Anne Conron of East Aurora and lost to Brianna Gibbs of Williamsville East, 6-0, 6-0.
Chloe Knapp of Jamestown was eliminated by Kosinski of Depew, 7-6, 6-3.
Sixteenth-seeded Leigh Yartz and Michaela Johnson of Southwestern lost their first match to top-seeded Christian Zablonski and Rachael Johnson of Orchard Park, 6-3, 6-3.
Corrine Cardinale and Paige Bentham of Maple Grove were dealt an opening 6-3, 6-4 defeat by Amy Xiah and Ananya Murthy of Williamsville East.
