Morgan Johnson’s Comebacks Highlight CCAA Tennis Finals

Southwestern’s Morgan Johnson scored a pair of come-from-behind victories that led her to the singles championship on Friday in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Tennis Tournament finals at the Lakewood Family YMCA.

Johnson fell behind in the semifinal match against Fredonia’s Georgie Gens, 3-6, but bounced back to take the next two games, 6-4, 6-4, earning a spot in the finals where she took on her teammate, Heidi Mueller, who had downed Jamestown’s Chloe Knapp, 6-2, 6-2.

Mueller took the early advantage, 3-6, but again, Johnson fought back with wins in the next two games, 6-3, 6-0, to claim the title.

In the consolation round, Knapp took third place by default due to an injury to Gens.

All four girls advance to the Section 6 championships.

In the doubles competition, Southwestern’s Victoria VanEvery and Elizabeth Rowan picked up the championship with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Frewsburg’s Rosemarie Mole and Emily Hair.

VanEvery and Rowan earned a berth in the finals with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Maple Grove’s Corrine Cardinale and Paige Bentham while Mole and Hair downed Leigh Yartz and Mikayla Johnson, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-2.

Cardinale and Bentham topped Yartz and Johnson, 6-7, (4-7), 7-5, 6-4 in the consolation round for third and fourth place.

All four doubles teams will be back in action at the sectionals.
