Robert J. Barber

RANDOLPH, N.Y. – Robert J. Barber, 84, of Hardscrabble Road, Randolph, passed away at 7:08 a.m. Thursday, (Oct. 10, 2013), at home with his family by his side.

He was born Jan. 30, 1929, in the Town of Coldspring, N.Y., the son of the late Raymond S. and Zillah Shedd Barber.

Bob was an area resident his entire life, and attended Randolph Central School, leaving to take over the family dairy farm on Hardscrabble Road in Randolph. He retired from farming in 1981 and continued driving school bus for Randolph Central School for many years.

In his younger days, he worked as a union carpenter and for Fenton Saw Mill, Bissell Saw Mill, King Cutlery and Fancher Furniture.

He was an accomplished hunter, and also enjoyed woodworking and carpentry. Bob was a former charter member of the Randolph Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 2273.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Delores Y. Swift, whom he married on Dec. 7, 1952, in Little Valley, a daughter, Lisa G. Harris and husband, Jason of Buffalo; three sons: Robert “Bob” Barber and wife, Carol of Salem, Ala., Jeffrey “Jeff” Barber of Cattaraugus, and Randall “Randy” Barber and wife, Tina of Randolph; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; and six step greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by siblings: Raymond Barber, Pauline Cowan, Arlene Osterman, Dorthea Nichols and Loretta Hancock.

The family will receive friends from 47 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 13, 2013), in the VanRensselaer & Son Funeral Home, Randolph, from where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Mark Loraner will officiate. Inurnment will be in the South Napoli Cemetery.
