Fire Investigators Determine Cause Of Home Explosion

RIPLEY – Fire Investigators determined a direct gas leak was the cause of the home explosion on 24 Lakeview Ave., Ripley, on Monday.

According to police, the homeowner had fixed a gas line break on his own in December 2012. Over the course of the past several months the ground where the repair was made had settled, causing the repaired section to break loose and a direct gas leak underground.

This leak allowed the ground to become saturated with natural gas, which let to the gas permeating into the basement of the home. Once the air mixture in the basement got to a volatile state, it ignited from the pilot light on the hot water tank which ultimately caused the explosion.

Nobody was injured in the blast.
