Falconer Seeks Immediate Applicants To Fill Board Vacancy

The Falconer Central School District is urgently seeking applicants for an immediate opening on its board of education.

According to Steve Penhollow, Falconer superintendent, applications for the position are now being accepted by the district in the wake of the resignation of Elizabeth Short, who had served on the board since 2006. He said interested individuals can find information on the position, as well as an application on the district’s website at

Penhollow said applications are being accepted through Friday, and the open seat is currently effective through May 20, 2014.

“We want to have people submit an application if they are interested,” Penhollow said. “(The position) is for the completion of the rest of this year’s term, and the (selected applicant) would then have to run for re-election next year.”

In order to qualify for the position, applicants are required to be at least 18 years old, an American citizen and have at least one year of residency within the Falconer district. Applications can be emailed or mailed to Julie Zahm, superintendent secretary.

The board also held a regular meeting Tuesday. An agreement for athletic training services between the district and Kari Newman was approved, and is to be effective from Sept. 1 through June 30, 2014, at a monthly stipend for the 10 months in which athletic practices and competitions are held.

Several personnel items were also present on the agenda. The board accepted the resignation of Randall Hofgren from the position of cleaner to be effective Sept. 25, and granted a maternity leave request to Tara VandeVelde, tentatively effective Dec. 18, with an anticipated return of Feb. 24, 2014.
