Habitat For Humanity To Meet Oct. 3
The Jamestown Satellite of the Chautauqua Area Habitat for Humanity will meet on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Jamestown Prendergast Library Fireplace Room. Anyone interested in participating as a volunteer in any capacity in the organization is welcome. Currently, Habitat is seeking individuals to work on the Family Partner Committee, Construction Committee and/or Community Outreach Committee.
The Jamestown Satellite has the good fortune to have a donated house to restore on Tew Street. Work there will include updating and modernizing this family home. This work can begin as soon as a volunteer base and organization is established in the Jamestown area. Within Chautauqua County there are three satellites, all supported by a single board of directors for Chautauqua Area Habitat for Humanity. Other satellites are located in Mayville and in Silver Creek, where each volunteer group is working to construct new homes for two families selected by the satellite’s family committee.
Habitat for Humanity is a unique housing ministry comprised solely of volunteers who participate in the renovation and construction of homes for low-income families or individuals who currently reside in conditions that are inadequate or sub-standard. The selected Habitat family will contribute up to 500 hours of “sweat equity” alongside Habitat volunteers on the construction of or repairs to their new home. In return, there are no interest charges on their mortgage. Likewise, Habitat makes no profit on the sale, but uses funding from principal payments from the new homeowner, in conjunction with donations from individuals, churches, private foundations and corporations to build and renovate more homes for individuals in need.
