Merle E. Holthouse
Merle E. Holthouse, 85, went to be with the Lord, peacefully, on Sept. 11, 2013.
He was born April 28, 1928 to the late Jesse and Ruth (Einink) Holthouse.
Merle was a family man and lifelong resident of Clymer, N.Y., where he operated a dairy farm alongside first his mother and brothers, and then his son-in-law.
Merle was a lifelong member of Abbe Reformed Church. He was a man of faith, and a shining example of what that means (although he would have humbly denied this) to everyone he met.
Merle was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Edith, whom he loved dearly; and his younger brother, Ralph. He is survived by his brother, Glen (Phyllis) Holthouse and sister, Doris Holthouse and her close friend, Willis Koren; children: Ann (Bart) Neckers and Mary (Brian) Jantzi; grandchildren: Jesse (Kate) Neckers, Kacie (Ryan) McGregor, and Abigail and Dayne Jantzi; and his long time special friend, Carletta Russell, who always had a “Hello there, Handsome!” for him.
He graduated from Clymer Central School in 1946. Merle had a servant attitude, serving his church as a deacon and elder, and his community, meeting the needs of others, often without being asked. He lived in such a way that God and family were clearly his priorities.
He made maple syrup for 68 years and loved sharing the process with the local schoolchildren. Merle was a member of several organizations, including Farm Bureau, Brokenstraw Tractor Club, Dairy Lea, DFA, and a board member for Agway.
Merle had some trademark qualities: his disdain for celery, his expertise in making “jackwax,” refer-ring to “the old-timers” even at 85, and rarely uttering “goodbye” to people, preferring instead “well, so long.” He had a refined sense of humor and a sharp wit.
If you would like to share memories of this great man, visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sept. 13, 2013, at the Spitzer Funeral Home, Clymer, N.Y. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at the Abbe Reformed Church on Sept. 14, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Kristen Livingston officiating.
Memorials may be made the Abbe Reformed Church, 595 Clymer-Sherman Road, P.O. Box 249, Clymer, NY 14724.
