The Rev. Dr. Raymond James Van Stone

GERRY – The Rev. Dr. Raymond James Van Stone, 85 of Heritage Village, formerly of Brooklyn, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, in the VA Medical Center, Buffalo.

He was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Brooklyn, the son of the late Albert and Pauline Friedman Van Stone.

He received his GED in 1950, his Bachelor of Arts in 1956 from Maryvale College and his master of divinity in 1960 from Biblical Seminary of New York. He also attended McCormick Theological Seminary, Cornell University and in 1984, Dr. Van Stone received an honorary degree in doctor of humanities from the state of Connecticut.

He served as a chaplain with the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Korean conflict and during the Vietnam conflict with the U.S. Army in Fort Carson, Colo., as a first lieutenant and stockade chaplain – 5th army division staff to the general.

Dr. Van Stone served 46 years in ministry with the Presbyterian Church and seven years with the United Methodist Church.

Husband of 45 years to Elizabeth “Betty” Hicks Van Stone, whom he mar-ried Jan. 11, 1968; brother of John and the late Frances and Joseph Van Stone, Mary Strange and Dorthea Smith.

Burial 2 p.m. Friday in Gerry Cemetery, with mili-tary honors by Cassadaga Memorial American Legion 1280.
