Shirley J. Crandall

MAYVILLE – Shirley J. Crandall, 84, of 40 E. Evans St., Mayville, formerly of Portland, died Wednesday (Aug. 28, 2013), in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Erie, Pa,, after a brief illness, with her family at her side.

She was born July 19, 1929, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of the late Ralph M. and Marjorie “Peg” Graham Jacobson.

Shirley had been a telephone operator for Chautauqua and Erie Telephone Co. in Westfield, prior to retiring.

She was a member of Tri-Church Parish in Brocton, and the Mayville United Methodist Church.

Shirley enjoyed knitting, reading, puzzles, and she was an avid sports fan. She loved her family very much and they were extremely important to her.

She is survived by six children: Sheila Goulding of Portland, Susan Crandall of Portland, Julie (Gary) Planty of Brocton, Janice (Mark McKane) of Mayville, Scott (Jeanne) Crandall of Broad Run, Va., and Todd Crandall of Fredonia; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carol Crandall of Ocala, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Le-land B. “Bounce” Crandall, whom she married July 29, 1949, and who died May 17, 2004; one brother, Gordon “Tickle” Jacobson; and a granddaughter, Carly Robb.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 7, 2013), at the Tri-Church Parish in Brocton. Burial will be in the Portland Evergreen Ceme-tery.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday (Sept. 6, 2013), in the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville.
