SWCS Board Approves Personnel Appointments

Personnel appointments were the primary focus of the Southwestern Central School district’s Board of Education meeting Tuesday.

On the instructional front, Allison Thompson, who is professionally certified in the area of speech and language disabilities, was appointed to a non-probationary .4 full-time equivalent position in the remedial speech tenure area for the 2013-14 school year. The appointment went into effect Thursday and will end on June 30, 2014.

A permanent, non-instructional position was awarded to Janet Lindell, who was appointed to serve as a teacher aide after completing a one-year probationary period, effective Thursday. Janet Beckerink was also appointed to serve as a teacher-aide after completing a one-year probationary period, effective Sept. 20.

Four individuals were approved as 2013 school tax bill preparers to help assist the district in the processing of school tax bills. The appointments of Donna Charles, Sylvia Erwin, Susan Marsh and Wendy Storms went into effect Wednesday.

The resignation of Chris Weaver from a non-instructional position, after five years of service, was also approved and will be effective Tuesday.

In other business, the board accepted the donation of a beginner, full-sized violin and case to the high school music department. The violin was donated by Kate Wilson, and is valued at approximately $99.

Maureen Donahue, Southwestern superintendent, also reported a presentation on the Common Core learning standards was given by Shelly O’Boyle, coordinator of curriculum and instruction.

“She did an excellent job of presenting on the Common Core,” Donahue said. “We’re just trying to figure it out, and we’re moving forward with it.”

The Common Core learning standards are a U.S. initiative that seeks to bring diverse state curricula into alignment with each other, while preparing students from college and career readiness. Although it was introduced in 2009, the 2012-13 academic year was the first in which New York schools were tested on the new standards.
