Davies Wins SLM Feature At Stateline

BUSTI – Sugar Grove’s New Beginnings Restaurant sponsored the final points night at Stateline Speedway and it was a night for intense racing and for winners and point champions.

Street Stock point leader Brian Crandall went into the night with a big lead and needed it as trouble in the middle of the feature and he ended the night connected to a wrecker posing for his point championship picture. Mark Ramsey won the feature passing Crandall on lap two of the caution filled event.

Nathan Short led all of the Limited Late Model feature laps for his second win of the season, but the point race was between point-leader Ryan Scott and defending champion Steve Kania. Scott started the event with a 25-point advantage and finished third behind Kania to take the title by just 15 points.

Chad Ruhlman made his fourth visit to the speedway winning his second Crate Late Model feature while defending champion Damian Bidwell clinched the title again.

Dick Barton went into the Super Late Model feature event with his 10th championship in hand. Barton’s qualifying heat finish put the title out of the reach of second-running Darrell Bossard. The feature became a showcase for last year’s champ, Dutch Davies, who came from third to first with a lap-nine turn to pass over early leaders Chris Hackett and Boom Briggs. It was the third win a row for Davies, who finished seventh in the standings.

John Woodward Jr. finished third in a rough-and-tumble E-Mod event for the 2013 title which saw Rich Michael Jr. win his seventh feature in eight attempts.

Defending Super Sportsman Champ Dan Nocero Jr. won their feature event, but fell short of the point title as Jim Kibbe became the new champ with a third-place finish.

Casey Burch ended his Super Challenger point race with another dominating win, his eighth of the season, and the point title.

Point-leader Crandall was on the pole for the Street Stock feature with Eric Harvey alongside. Ramsey and Richard Wojtowicz were in row two. Crandall led lap one, but then a spin by Nick Reale brought out the first yellow.

John Britt got sideways on the restart and started collecting cars with Gary Fisher the first victim followed by Jason Badgley, Elaine Best, Jason Covey and Jerry Fish. Chris Couchenour made hard contact with the back stretch wall on the next restart for caution three. Ramsey took the lead from Crandall as lap two finally ended when Reale spun for caution four before lap three was done. Ramsey began building a lead after the restart as Crandall fought Eric Harvey, Wojtowicz and Mark Thompson for second.

Wojtowicz and Crandall tangled for the next caution and Crandall was unable to continue. Guy Adams was the next to have problems with a spin in turn two. Twelve laps were complete with just nine cars remaining on the track.

Ramsey finished the race unchallenged and Thompson grabbed second on the final lap.

Short was the leader at the end of the first Limited Late Model feature. Jake Finnerty was second with point leader Ryan Scott third, Tyler Green fourth and Kania fifth. Kania had to finish three spots ahead of Scott to successfully defend his championship. Bill Reeves brought the first yellow of the event with a spin in turn four on lap nine. Short was the leader with Finnerty second followed by Scott and Kania.

One lap after the restart Scott beat Finnerty to the line for the runner-up spot and Kania was fourth. John Cline slowed the race with four laps remaining with a spin between turns three and four. Kania started alongside Scott for the restart and passed Scott as the white flew. Short won the event going away with Kania second and the 2013-point champion Ryan Scott third.

Joe Buccola Jr. was on the Crate Late Model pole and led the first lap while point-leader Damian Bidwell started ninth. Buccola gave way to Ruhlman on lap four just before Ed Coast and Nick Mohawk brought out the first yellow. Jason Genco and Buccola ran door to door for three laps, but Justin Smith lost the handle in turn four for the second yellow.

Genco was able to take the second spot on the restart as Buccola slipped to third to contest that spot with Jim Frank. Frank put Buccola back to fourth on lap 11 and began chasing Genco for second. Coast caused caution four with 12 laps down. Ruhlman checked out after the restart leaving Genco and Frank to fight for the runner-up spot. Coast spun again with three laps remaining for yellow five.

Genco stayed with Ruhlman through the final laps but could not make the pass. Ruhlman got his second win of the season and with a ninth-place finish, Bidwell defended his championship title.

Chris Hackett and Bump Hedman were on the front row for the last Super Late Model point race of the season. Point-leader Barton was in row two with Briggs. Last year’s champ, Davies, was in row three alongside Randy Lobb. Hedman led into turn one on the start but Hackett led at the line. Dave Scott slowed on lap three bringing out the yellow. Hackett, Hedman, Briggs, Barton and Davies were the restart leaders.

Hackett stayed up high with Hedman on the inside. Barton lost a spot to Davies and Davies passed Hedman two laps later for third. The three leaders were nose to tail on lap nine then Davies passed both Hackett and Briggs for the race lead coming out of turn two.

Hackett nearly collected the turn two fence on lap 12 giving second to Briggs. Hackett continued to fade and Hedman regained third with Lobb fourth and Darrell Bossard fifth.

With five laps remaining Davies lapping cars with Briggs and Hedman a distant second and third. Davies cruised to the win his third of the season and champion Barton finished seventh.

Greg Johnson and Rich Michael Jr. led the E-Mods to the initial green. Michael led at the line with Johnson second. The yellow flew for Butch Southwell as his machine slowed to a stop on the back stretch. Mike McGee was third on the restart behind Johnson and Michael.

Chevy Sweet spun on the restart for yellow No. 2. Point-leader Woodward was fourth and Bud Watson fifth for the restart. Yellow No. 3 appeared for David Lamphere with seven laps complete. Johnson made contact with McGee on the restart spinning McGee for caution four. Johnson was sent to the rear for the restart and lap eight was complete then Lamphere spun for yellow five. One more lap was complete, but then a spin by Stu Rickard caused caution six.

As Michal finished the 10th lap Greg Johnson, Mike Eschrich and Cale Crocker tangled for caution seven. With five laps remaining Michael led John Boyd by 10 carlengths with Woodward third and Watson fourth. Michael took the checkers for his seventh win Woodward finished as the champion.

Jim Kibbe led the Super Sportsman points by 80 points over last year’s champ, Nocero. Nocero had to finish eight spots ahead of Kibbe to defend his title.

Kibbe started second and Nocero fourth with Mike Kosinski was on the pole. Nocero quickly moved to the front with Kosinski second and Kibbe third. With five remaining the leaders were in lap traffic as Kibbe kept Nocero in sight just one position back.

Nocero did what he could to win the event, but lost the championship to Kibbe.
