JCC?Students Raise More Than $3,000 For CWC
JCC’s Earth Awareness Club recently donated $100 to the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy for the protection of Chautauqua Lake. The club has made donations nearly every semester since 2007, for a total of $3,367.39 raised. The Earth Awareness Club has sold items such as organic chocolate bars and fair trade coffee to raise funds for the causes it supports.
“They are a good example of young people who are also working to make a difference,” said the club’s adviser, Professor Janis Bowman.
JCC’s Earth Awareness Club promotes an increased understanding and appreciation of the natural world and its creatures, wise environmental stewardship, enhanced knowledge of important environmental issues, compassionate living, and local awareness and action.
The Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy is a local not-for-profit land trust and watershed education organization supported by 1,200 families, businesses and organizations, that is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the water quality, scenic beauty, and ecological health of the lakes, streams, wetlands and watersheds of the Chautauqua region. Over the past 23 years, the organization has itself and in cooperation with the New York state, conserved two miles of Chautauqua Lake and Outlet shoreline and 718 acres of land across Chautauqua County and established 18 nature preserves. It provides watershed education programs and technical assistance to landowners and service providers on landscaping and conservation through its Healthy Landscaping-Healthy Waters Program.
