Finnerty, Kibbe Take Firsts In Specials At Stateline Speedway
BUSTI – It was a perfect night for running the Magnum Graf-X and Finn’s Auto Sales and Service Limited Late Model Special and the Leroy’s Towing of Corry Super Sportsman Special at Stateline Speedway on Saturday.
Jake Finnerty scored his biggest win of the season in the Limited Late Special in a green-to-checkers run, outdistancing last year’s champ Steve Kania at the end.
Like Finnerty Jim Kibbe led every lap of the Super Sportsman Special, his fourth win extending his point lead and after turning sub 16-second laps in the qualifying events, last year’s Super Late Model champion Dutch Davies returned to championship form leading every lap of the feature event for his first win of the season.
Also, Ryan Scott started on the pole for the Crate Late Model feature and never looked back. Matt Harvey ran a close second in Scott’s third Crate Late win of the season while Rich Michael Jr. took the lead on lap four of the E-Mod feature from early-leader Nathan Hill.
Chad Bender was the Super Challenger winner, beating point-leader Casey Burch, who had charged from the back of the field to second at the checkers.?
Finnerty and Dustin Eckman were on the front row for the Magnum Graf-x and Finn’s Auto Sales and Service Limited Late Model Special followed by Nathan Short and John Cline in row two. Point-leader Ryan Scott started eighth. Finnerty was the first back to the line on the start followed by Eckman and Short. Short nipped Eckman at the completion of lap four to claim the runner-up spot and Steve Kania moved into the top five and Scott was sixth.
Finnerty began lapping cars on lap 12 with a 15-carlength lead over Short, who was being challenged by Kania. Kania took the spot on lap 14 and began to run down Finnerty. The fight was then for third as Scott Eckman and Short were all trying for the spot. Scott won out for third as the two-to-go signal was given.
Kania was unable to catch Finnerty and iy was Finnerty’s second win of the season.
Jim Kibbe started third in the Leroy’s Towing of Corry Super Sportsman Special and led the first lap. Norm Kloszewski spun for the first caution of the event with five laps down. Kibbe, Don McGuire and Mike Kosinski were the restart leaders.
Kosinski passed McGuire one lap after the restart as Kibbe began rebuilding his lead. Brent Crandall spun on the front stretch with nine laps down for the second yellow. Kibbe controlled the restart and McGuire took over second, but three laps later Kosinski repeated his earlier pass and put McGuire back to third. Dan Nocero Jr. caught McGuire for third.
Kibbe finished the 20 laps with a sizeable lead his fourth win of the season.
Doug Eck and Dutch Davies were on the front row for the Super Late Model feature with Chris Hackett and Darrell Bossard in row two. Point-leader Dick Barton started 20th after a mechanical problem in his qualifying heat. Eck won the race to turn one on the start, but it was Davies by a car length at the end of the lap. Matt Urban spun on lap two for the first caution. Barton was 15th for the restart.
Hackett was second on the restart as Eck skipped to third. John Volpe was fourth followed by Bossard and Boom Briggs.
Hackett lost two spots on lap four as Eck regained second followed by Volpe. Volpe continued to move up taking second from Eck on lap 10 and Dave Scott was fourth with Hackett back another spot.
At the halfway mark, Davies had begun lapping cars with nearly a straight away lead over Volpe and Scott. Davies had checked out on the field and finished way out in front for his first win of the season.
Dave Shagla Jr. lost the handle on the first circuit of the Crate Late Model feature causing a complete restart. Pole sitter Ryan Scott became the early leader. Matt Harvey was second with Scott Gurdak third and Damian Bidwell eighth. With 10 laps remaining, Scott was still the leader with Harvey five carlengths back.
Doug Ricotta and second starting Scott Gurdak were contesting the third spot several carlengths behind Harvey. Harvey could catch Scott in the corners, but lose him on the straights giving Scott his third win of the season.
Nathan Hill and Rich Michael Jr. made up the front row of the E-Mod feature. Dave Lamphere spun as lap one ended for the first yellow. Hill was the leader followed by Michael, Shane Crotty, John Woodward Jr. and Justin Carlson. Michael took the lead as lap four ended and the yellow flew for Kirk Bradley.
Dale McDonald Jr. spun for yellow No. 3 with eight laps down. Michael, Hill, Justin Carlson, Froman, Crotty and David Scott were the restart leaders. A multi-car incident collected nine cars nearly blocking the speedway and Spanky Hall threw the red flag. Crotty was involved along with Ron Seeley, Butch Southwell, Chad Carlson, Bradley, Dan Davies and Greg Johnson.
Just past the halfway point, debris on the backstretch caused caution five. Lamphere and Josh John tangled on the restart. Justin Carlson was second for the restart, but Bradley and Brian Wilson tangled for caution seven.
With seven laps remaining, Chevy Sweet stopped high in turn four for caution No. 8. A smoking Wilson caused caution nine with three laps remaining and then one lap later Sweet spun for yellow 10. Hill came in to turn three too hot collecting Froman and point-leader Woodward. Froman bumped Hill during the caution and was sent to the pits.
Michael, Justin Carlson, Scott, Woodward and Greg Johnson were the restart leaders. Michael remained the leader winning his fifth feature in six attempts.
Gary Fisher spun on the initial start of the Street Stock feature causing a yellow before the first lap could be completed. John Coughlin was the first to finish lap one, but the second yellow of the race followed before lap two was complete as Mark Thompson and two other cars tangled in turn two. Coughlin remained the leader with Richard Wojtowicz second and Mark Ramsey third. Lap cars became a factor just before Guy Adams spun for yellow three.
Seven laps were complete with Coughlin, Wojtowicz, Ramsey and Jason Covey the leaders.
Ramsey charged to the front on the restart to become the leader with just six laps remaining. Ramsey was all alone out front as the two-to-go signal flew with Wojtowicz mired in lap traffic. Ramsey took the checkers his second of the season.
Early-leader Dustin Lamb lost the Super Challenger feature lead to Chad Bender on lap three. Point-leader Casey Burch was third at the halfway point from his 12th starting spot. Burch was able to get to second, but could not catch Bender. It was Bender’s second win.
