Van’s Reopens Downtown

If you work in downtown Jamestown and are looking for an affordable, quick place to grab a bite, a city restaurant has reopened along North Main Street serving a familiar local delicacy.

Van’s Texas Hots, located at 29 N. Main St., has reopened to serve chili dogs, hamburgers, Philly cheesesteaks, Cuban sandwiches, chicken fingers, onion rings, French fries and deserts. The business reopened Thursday, Aug. 1, under a new partnership between Allen M. VanGuilder and Brian E. Johnson. The business will be open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and late-night Fridays and Saturday from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.

“I’ve always dreamed of doing this,” VanGuilder said. “Opening a Texas hot or barbecue joint has always been what I wanted to do. My next goal is to open a smoked-barbecue drive-thru where KFC used to be.”

VanGuilder said in an area known for several Texas hot restaurants, Van’s was the first to open in 1919 in Jamestown. He said he wants to carry on the long tradition of the restaurant by offering people a good meal at a price they can afford.

“I have the best quality products at the lowest prices,” he said. “The food, 90 percent of it is organic, and nothing is microwaved. It is all homemade, nothing is frozen. I’m using local produce and local meats. It is all local. I want to put the money I make back into the community.”

VanGuilder said he has been in the restaurant business for 20 years, helping to run four prior restaurants. He said this is the first time he is the owner/operator of his own business.

“We seat 18 people, and my goal is to serve 500 people a day,” he said. “With my prices, people will (come to Van’s).”

VanGuilder said Van’s Texas Hots does takeout orders, and will deliver to the elderly, to the Jamestown police and fire station and to Jamestown City Hall. For more information or to place an order, call 489-7542.
