Weed Eaters

BEMUS POINT – “That’s what we do everyday, 10 hours a day, 50 hours a week,” said Lisa Matteson, 21, of Lakewood, as she pointed to the pile of weeds she and Makalia Haveron, 18, of Falconer collected from the Chautauqua Lake shore off Midway State Park.

Friday morning fog was grudgingly giving way to sunshine as the pair worked their summer job with the Chautauqua Lake Association for the second year. They’ve wielded their pitchforks and slowly moved along the shore on a CLA barge since June 1.

The grassy weeds will be placed in “a big red dump truck,” Haveron said, and taken to area farms for compost.

Matteson said CLA summer employees are often helped by volunteers from Cummins, particularly on Fridays.

Matteson is finishing up at JCC and will attend the University of Buffalo, while Haveron is looking forward to her freshman year at Daemen College in Amherst.
