Howie Mandel Brings His Standup Act To Salamanca
SALAMANCA – Howie Mandel, the man who brought voice to classic characters such as Bobby Generic from “Bobby’s World,” Gizmo from “Gremlins” and Skeeter from “Muppet Babies,” will perform standup comedy in Salamanca this month.
Mandel, who is currently a judge on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and executive producer of TBS’ “Deal With It,” will appear at the Seneca Allegany Casino on Friday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. Mandel has also appeared on other NBC shows such as “Deal or No Deal” and “St. Elsewhere.”
According to Mandel, although he doesn’t have any specific memories of performing or visiting the region before, standup comedy is one of his favorite aspects of his career, and he is excited to share it with area residents.
“For the last 35 years I’ve toured up to 200 live dates a year,” Mandel said. “Regardless of everything else I do in my career, whether it be producing, acting, hosting or whatever – standup has always been my comeback to comfort zone.”
Because Mandel has been touring for about 35 years, he’s accumulated quite a bit of material for his performances, he said. However, he warned that although the majority of his work is kid and family-friendly, his standup comedy is not.
“Most of my shows are family-oriented, but my live (show) is not, so don’t bring the kids,” Mandel said. “I have a plethora of material to draw from, but the thing is that I always look to be taken off the beaten path. So, a good portion of it is improvisational and in the moment. I don’t edit myself, and I just have fun so if something just comes out I would hate to be in the presence of youth.”
His material might be unconventional, but Mandel still hopes that his audience walks away with a grin, a giggle and a lasting impression. But, the one thing he hopes his fans take away from the experience is a good time.
“I look at it like being a giant party and I’m just trying to be the center of attention,” Mandel said. “My standup is the only thing that I don’t have a mark to hit, line to recite or commercials to throw to. It’s like the freest of all the things that I do.”
Fans of Mandel’s work from early in his career will also be able to enjoy the show. According to Mandel, people in the audience could possibly hear Bobby.
“I don’t plan – that’s the beauty of it for me,” Mandel said. “I don’t know what I’ll do, but it will be somewhat different and fun. And, I look forward to standing there in front of an audience and having a great time.”
