Scott Wins Seamens Memorial At Stateline

BUSTI – After two weeks of rainouts, Mother Nature delivered a perfect summer evening for the Tobber Racing and Lias Tire-sponsored Seamens Memorial and the Maplevale Farms Street Stock Special at Stateline Speedway on Saturday night.

David Scott, Dick Barton and Dutch Davies crossed the start/finish line with one lap to go three wide in one of the most exciting Super Late Model races of the season. Scott passed Barton on that final lap, a feat he had attempted throughout the race but did not accomplish until the final corner.

Rich Michael Jr. visited the winners circle for the fourth time in a green to checkers E-Mod feature win while Ryan Scott closed within 20 points of Limited Late Model points leader Steve Kania. It was Scott’s fourth win of the season.

Chris Withers heads the wins column in the Street Stock Division after getting his fourth win of the season by leading every lap of the feature event and Ontario native Luke Carleton was first across the line in the Crate Late Model feature for his first Crate Late Model win.

The 2012 Super Sportsman champ, Dan Nocero Jr., won his fourth feature by passing early leader Ron Burgun and Casey Burch won another Super Challenger feature, his fifth extending his domination it the division.

Greg Oakes and Barton were on the front row for the Fritz and Lynn Seamens Memorial. Boom Briggs and Doug Eck made up row two with Bump Hedman and Chris Hackett in row three. Oakes was the first by the flagstand, then Briggs, Hedman and Chuck Parker tangled for the first yellow before a lap was completed.

Barton moved up against the cushion and took the lead from Oakes coming out of turn two on the first lap. Eck settled into third with Hackett fourth and David Scott fifth from his ninth starting spot. Scott was third by lap seven.

Eck suffered a flat left rear tire, causing the second caution with eight laps complete. Scott continued to charge taking second on the restart and challenging Barton for the lead. Barton moved to the high side while Scott stayed in the middle groove.

Two laps later, Scott also moved up. Barton took the crossed flags with a 10 carlength lead over Scott and Oakes was fighting with last year’s champ, Dutch Davies, for third. Parker caused caution three with 16 laps complete. Then Wally Fox and Bob Dorman caused caution four with 18 laps down.

The battle between Scott and Barton resumed after the restart as Scott clung to the inside with Barton on the cushion. Scott could get along side, but not complete the pass and Davies joined the fight. Scott led lap out of turn two, but Barton led at the line.

Lap 26 ended with Barton just a nose ahead of Scott and Davies as they went three wide by flagstand. Parker spun again setting up a single file restart with three laps remaining.

Barton led as the white flag fell, but Scott was up to the task beating Barton to the checkers for his second win of the season.

E-Mod winner Michael was on the front row and quickly took control of the race. Points-leader John Woodward Jr. was second with Mike McGee third. With five of the 20 laps complete Michael led Woodward and McGee by 15 carlengths.

On lap eight, Michael entered lap traffic and Woodward jumped the cushion giving McGee the runner-up spot. John Kelsey brought out the first caution of the event after contacting the turn four wall, the red flag was displayed and Kelsey was transported by ambulance off the speedway.

Two laps after the restart, Butch Southwell, Chevy Sweet and Ron Seeley tangled for the second yellow. Michael lead with McGee second followed by David Scott, Woodward and Justin Carlson, as 14 laps remained.

Scott jumped the cushion on the restart dropping to sixth and on the next circuit Dale McDonald Jr. stopped in turn three for caution No. 3. Michael easily led the final circuit for his fourth win in five appearances.

Ryan Scott led the first circuit for the Limited Late feature but the yellow appeared as the first lap ended, Mike Lozowski had spun in turn four. Steve Kania was second with Jake Finnerty third and Steve Moynihan fourth.

The top three settled into the bottom groove after the restart and two laps later the rest of the field joined them as Kania and Scott began building a lead. At the halfway point, Scott had built a little cushion between himself and Kania but one lap later Tyler Green lost the handle in turn two allowing the field to close with the leader.

Scott was able to maintain the lead after the restart and slowly pull away from Kania while Finnerty was a distant third. Kania moved to the top for the final two circuits, but could not close with Scott who notched his fourth win of the season.

Withers started second, but finished lap one of the Street Stock Special in the lead. Jerry Fish spun with three laps complete for yellow No. 1. Withers, Mark Ramsey, Richard Wojtowicz, Dennis Asel and Chris Couchenour were the restart leaders.

Cassie Rockwell spun on the restart for yellow No. 2. Just one lap was run as debris on the back stretch caused a third caution. Caution No. 4 occurred when Asel made contact with Couchenour sending them both to the rear of the field for the restart. Cody Bliss was disqualified during the yellow.

Gary Fisher was the next to have problems and yellow flag No. 5 flew. After four yellows, the fifth lap was finally complete. Withers was out in front with Ramsey second, Mark Thompson from seventh third and points-leader Brian Crandall fourth. Thompson retired on lap 14 and Mike Zemcik spun with 16 laps down.

Withers continued to lead followed by Ramsey and Crandall. The final four laps did not change the race leaders with Withers leading all four for his third win of the season.

Carleton and Mark Tatalovic were lined up on the front row for the Crate Late Model feature with Scott Gurdak and Justin Smith in row two. Carleton led the first circuit with Tatalovic second, but Ed Coast spun in turn one on lap five for the first caution of the event. Carleton, Tatalovic, Gurdak, Smith and Matt Cobb were the restart leaders. Gurdak was second after the restart and Tatalovic slipped to third.

Gurdak slowed on the speedway causing the second yellow with just three laps remaining. Carleton stayed on top for the win his first of the season and believed to be the first Canadian to win a late model event.

Ron Burgun led the first two laps of the Super Sportsman feature and last year’s champ, Nocero, led the third. Right after Nocero took the lead, the yellow flew for Brent Crandall stopped in turn four. A spin and go by Joe Karash caused caution No. 2 with seven laps down. Mike Murray, Karash and Mike Kibbe brought out caution No. 3 one lap later. Nocero, Michael Kosinski, Don McGuire and point leader Jim Kibbe were the leaders.

One lap was completed then Clint Haskins caused yellow four. Haskins had move problems on lap 11 for caution five. Jim Kibbe was third after the restart.

After taking the lead Nocero ran the entire race unchallenged for his fourth win.

A spin by Will Glover on the initial start of the Super Challenger feature caused a complete restart of the race. Glover had more problems on the restart by being black-flagged for a heavily smoking race car. Travis Darling was the race leader with Burch second.

A last-lap yellow set up a dash for the win. Burch won the dash for the win beating Darling to the line by three car lengths.
