Corner Coffeehouse Gives New Option At WCA

No longer will people at WCA Hospital have to ask the question, “Where is a good place to get coffee?”

On Wednesday, the grand opening of The Corner Coffeehouse was held at WCA Hospital. The business is to the right after walking through the main entrance of the hospital, where the WCA Auxiliary Gift Shop is also located.

The Corner Coffeehouse is operated by Joseph and April Glarner. In addition to locally roasted fresh coffee, the new coffeehouse offers a la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Glarners offer a variety of pastries, desserts, soups and sandwiches. Free wireless Internet service is available for patrons at the coffeehouse. The restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Glarner said they opened the business inside the hospital about six weeks ago.

“We wanted to gauge the (hospital) staff, and how to accommodate them. We wanted to figure out our place here,” he said. “Our biggest customer is the staff so we offer meals they can just grab and go. We have a new menu, and we offer organic produce and vegetarian meals. Lunch items are offered for under $5.”

Glarner said he roasts the coffee himself at their business in Frewsburg, The Corner Coffeehouse & Bistro. The Frewsburg location is at 54 W. Main St. The restaurant is known for their homemade pastas and live jazz music. It is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

“I personally roast all the beans. It is at its peak of freshness,” he said. “We’re hands on. I’m in the kitchen making everything, and April is the graphic designer and works the social media networks. What we do is high quality; that is why we have been successful in Frewsburg. We’ve turned the location into a successful business where two other businesses failed before us.”

Glarner said the couple’s goal is to open up several chains of The Corner Coffeehouse in the area.

“We’re thinking 10 in 10 years, so WCA was a logical step for us,” he said.

Expanding the coffee operation is not the only goal for the Glarners. Helping others is also a priority. That is why they donate some of the proceeds from coffee sales to charities. Glarner said they give to St. Susan Center, Community Helping Hands and Stone to Bread.

Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital president, said the hospital was in need of a place for people to go to get a cup of coffee.

“We are very pleased they are here. It is a wonderful asset for the hospital,” she said. “It is a nice, quiet spot to relax.”

The coffee shop is next to the hospital’s gift shop. Cheri Foti, W.C.A. Auxiliary gift shop buyer, said the new cafe is a great news for the gift shop.

“The cafe brings more people in. While they wait for their food, they are able to look around the gift shop,” she said.

All proceeds from the gift shop benefit WCA Hospital. The gift shop is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., depending on the number of volunteers the business has. Foti said volunteers are always needed. To schedule an appointment to volunteer in the gift shop or other areas of the hospital, contact Elizabeth DeRosa, hospital volunteer coordinator, at 664-8224.
