George F. “Fritz” Meger

CASSADAGA – George F. “Fritz” Meger, 85, long-time Cassadaga resident and resident of St. Colomban’s Retirement Home, where he was loved by the residents and staff, died Friday, Aug 2, 2013, at the Chautauqua County Home.

He was born Nov. 5, 1927, in Cassadaga, the son of the late Robert J. and Marian Viall Meger.

A U.S. Army/Air Force veteran, he served from 1946-47.

Fritz was employed with the New York State Department of Transportation for more than 30 years, as a highway worker, retiring in 1984.

He was a life member of the Cassadaga Memorial American Legion Post 1280 and had previously served as first vice commander. He was also a life member of the NRA and member of the Beaver Club. He loved collecting guns and leather tooling.

Fritz could often be found making sauerkraut with his extended family in his Cassadaga garage.

Husband of 41 years to the late Dorothy L. Smaltz Meger, whom he married in July 1949, and who died June 3, 1991; father of Robert B. (Theresa) Meger of Jamestown, Brian M. (Debra) Meger of Connecticut, Mary E. (Ronald) Wallen of Buffalo, Lucinda A. (Rodney) Spears of Forestville, and the late David B. Meger (June 28, 1957); grandfather of 11; great-grandfather of two; brother of the late Rita Saletta. Also survived by nieces, nephews and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Cassadaga Memorial American Legion Post 1280, 228 Maple Ave., Cassadaga, with a reception immediately following.

Burial will be in Cassadaga Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Cassadaga Memorial American Legion 1280 or the American Cancer Society or the Cassadaga Volunteer Fire Department. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville.
