CASAC To Hold Motivational Interview Training
“Motivational Interviewing (Tipping Ambivalence toward Change) A Practical Application of OARS” will be offered through the Chautauqua Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Council.
Cheryl Martin, MA, RN, CASAC, will present this training on Friday, Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. This three-hour course is scheduled to be offered at The Salvation Army, 82 S. Main St., Jamestown.
The presenter is an expert on the topic.
Martin is an Integrated Health Trainer and Clinical Consultant, and continues to provide motivational interviewing training through her place of employment, Monroe County Office of Mental Health.
She is an Office of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services faculty member.
Since the last time she presented in 2010 some changes have been made to the method. She has continually updated her training to reflect all the new research and learning in the third edition of the motivational interviewing book.
Some concepts/skills important to motivational interviewing include self-efficacy (confidence, competence), developing discrepancy, compassion, sustain talk and dancing with discord.
The five key communication skills of OARS are 1. Open-ended questions; 2. Affirmations; 3. Reflective listening; 4. Summaries; and 5. Providing information with permission.
After a brief PowerPoint presentation, the remainder of the session will allow participants to watch examples of motivational interviewing and then practice these techniques using real role play scenarios.
Counselors would be most interested in this training.
Also this course is suitable for those seeking professional credentialing as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor, Credentialed Prevention Professional or Credentialed Prevention Specialist.
