FASTRACK Northeast Series Action Highlights Eriez Racing

HAMMETT, Pa. – The FASTRAK Northeast Touring Series came to Eriez Speedway for the second leg of the Triple Crown Summer Sizzler. The original second leg was scheduled for Marion Center on July 27 was rained out and will be made up at a date to be determined.

The 30 cars entered were divided into four groups for qualifying and heat races. The fastest-overall qualifier was Corning’s Wayne Robertson, winner of the first leg of the series at Conneaut, Ohio’s Raceway 7. Robertson timed in at 16.186 and an average speed of 83.405 MPH. Robertson was in group two.

The fastest qualifiers for the other groups were Scott Gurdak in group 1, Matt Latta, winner of a 2012 touring event at Eriez, in group 3 and Dennis Lunger in group 4. Heat winners were Max Blair, Robertson, Latta, and Lunger.

Heat race finishes determined the top-16 starting lineup for the 30-lap, $2,000-to-win feature. Two B-Mains determined the next eight spots and the high point car not qualified, Bobby Rohrer, was given a provisional starting berth.

After a four-wide salute to the fans, the Summer Sizzler for the Sweeney Chevrolet FASTRAK Late Models got under way with Blair and Robertson leading the way. During the pace laps, Joel Watson experienced mechanical problems, coming to a halt on the back straight and needing to be towed to the pit area. When the green fell, Bobby Rohrer’s driveshaft also fell, slowing the race immediately.

When racing got under way Blair shot to the lead with Matt Latta getting by Robertson for second on lap two. Robertson charged back, getting alongside Latta at lap five, but was unable to complete the pass before Billy Henry spun in turn two, again slowing the field. The top four for the restart were Blair, Latta, Robertson, and Scott Gurdak.

At 15 laps completed, Blair caught lapped traffic while Joe Martin headed to the infield with mechanical problems. With nine laps remaining, Eric Andrus looped his car in turn three, slowing the field again and bunching the field behind Blair and Latta. The field only made it to turn two when Joel Prosser and Billy Henry got together in turn two.

Robertson came back to second at lap 27, but Blair was opening a lead to six carlengths at lap 29. Meanwhile Chad Wright moved up to fourth behind Latta. Blair went on to the win, his fourth of the year at Eriez. Following the defending track champion to the checkers were Robertson, Latta, Wright, and Scott Gurdak.

The Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Model feature had Chris Hackett and Scott Johnson on the front row of the 18-car starting field. Damon Haught spun in turn one of lap one, collecting Michael Oakes.

After the complete restart Hackett led the way with Robbie Blair coming to second on lap one looking for his sixth win of the season. On the back straight of lap four, Blair rocketed by the outside of Hackett. Defending champion Mike Knight was right behind Hackett at lap six with Boom Briggs and Scott Johnson fighting for fourth.

Halfway through the event, Blair was in lapped traffic while Hackett and Knight followed side by side for second. Hackett was able to use the traffic to his advantage and opened a two-carlength lead that disappeared when the traffic was cleared. Knight was able to take the spot at lap 17, but was unable to close the gap on the Titusville Terror. At the checkers it was Blair, Knight, Briggs, who got by Hackett with two to go, and Johnson.

Eighteen competitors started the Plyler Overhead Door E-Mod feature with a complete restart necessary when Gary Eicher came to a stop in turn two. With Steve Simon on the pole and points-leader Rich Michael on the front row, Michael wasted no time assuming the lead, looking for win No. 5. Sixth-starting Steve Dixon came to second at lap two, but Michael was 10 carlengths ahead at the end of three when Jake Eller lost the handle, placing the field again under yellow.

At green, John Boardman went to second. In turn four on lap four, Dixon and defending champion Joel Watson got together, both spinning and collecting Chad Carlson and John Boyd. For the restart, it was Michael, Boardman, and Butch Southwell up front with 17 to go.

After one lap of green, Bud Watson was fighting Southwell for third after starting 13th. After six laps in, Eller again spun. At halfway, it was Michael, Boardman, Southwell, Watson, and Shane Crotty. Crotty and Watson waged a spirited battle for fourth with Crotty eventually prevailing. On the final lap, Joel Watson got by his cousin Bud for the fifth place spot.

Defending Conway and O’Malley Limited Late Model champion Steve Kania took the lead at the drop of the green flag for their feature. Action was halted with one lap complete when Mike Lozowski and Bobby Vogt came together hard in turn three ending Vogt’s night.

Kania was never headed in his run to his third feature win of the season with Dan Maxim and Ryan Scott, both winners this season, having a spirited battle for the runner-up position. Maxim prevailed with Scott third, last week’s winner Chris McGuire fourth and Chris Ottaway fifth.

Chris Couchenour and Ron Johnson started the Eric Walter Tree & Stump Removal Street Stock feature from the front of the 11 rows. Couchenour led Johnson from the drop of the green with reigning champion Pat McGuire coming to second at the end of five laps. One more lap in and McGuire was the leader.

Caution came at lap 12 when Eric Ester looped his mount in turn two, then on the restart McGuire spun in turn one. Couchenour was sent to the rear of the field for his part in the incident. Under caution, seven cars piled up at the end of the back straight. Gary Fisher was the new leader with Joe Rohrer second.

Rohrer tried to get by in the final laps but Fisher held on with Rohrer settling for second, Don McGuire third, Brandon Groters fourth, and Chris Withers fifth.

Steve Enlow and Jason Brightman ran side by side through the first lap of the Kandy’s Gentleman’s Club Challenger feature with Enlow having sole possession of the spot at the end of two when the first caution appeared. Two more cautions appeared before another lap was complete. Enlow led to the checkers with Joe Beach, Kasey Hammond, Wes Stull, and Don Hebner filling out the top five.
