Short Wins Limited Late Special At Stateline

BUSTI – It was Specials night at Stateline Speedway on Saturday as the rained-out Affinity One Federal Credit Union Limited Late Special was run along with the S. Tabone Paving Crate Late Model Special.

Nate Short was the first to score in a green-to-checkers run to cash the check for the Affinity One FCU Limited Late Special, a race that ran without a caution.

David Scott won the E-Mod feature, his first of two wins, in a hard-fought race with three different leaders and hard crash with three laps remaining. John Woodward Jr. was the early leader with Justin Carlson the next leader and finally Scott for the win.

Veteran Scott Gurdak notched his second Crate Late Model win, beating 2012 Champ Damian Bidwell for the S. Tabone Paving Special check.

Scott won his second of the night in the Super Late Model feature leading from the initial green, race dominated by second generation drivers.

Travis Darling was the early leader in the Super Challenger feature, but gave way to Casey Burch on lap four. Burch went on to win the event his fifth of the season.

Ryan Scott made the headlines in the second Limited Late feature of the evening winning his third of the season in a caution free event and crash-filled Street Stock feature ended with veteran Brian Crandall in victory lane his third visit of the season.

Jim Kibbe out ran Mike Kosinski for the Super Sportsman win his third.

Short started on the pole for the Affinity One FCU Limited Late Special and led the first circuit with Ryan Scott second and Steve Kania third. Short was able to extend his lead over the first 10 laps and overtook the back of the field.

Still under green at the halfway point in the 25-lap event, Short had a half of a straight lead over Scott and Kania. Steve Moynihan was fourth with Tyler Green completing the top five.

Short could not be caught as the race ran without a caution.

Justin Carlson and John Woodward brought the E-Mod field to Mark Matthews green flag with Woodward leading the pack after one lap. David Scott came to second on lap two and tried the inside line for the lead, getting alongside at four laps. The leaders came into heavy traffic at six laps, running side by side until caution flew due to Jake Eller spinning out in turn three at lap seven.

For the restart Scott and Justin Carlson lined up behind the leader with Scott coming right back alongside Woodard. Still using the inside line, Scott was able to nose ahead on the back stretch but Woodward again led at the line until a caution at lap nine for a five-car skirmish again slowed the field. After green, Woodward again led but caution again slowed the field after 11 laps.

After the restart, Carlson was on the move, coming by Scott on lap 12 and into the lead a lap later. Scott finally got by Woodward at lap 14 and then battled Carlson for a lap, taking over the front spot as caution again flew.

With three laps remaining Greg Johnson and Justin got together on the back straight with the result being Johnson in the wall, getting some air time and Carlson turning sideways, collecting Mike McGee, who continued. Both Carlson and Johnson’s mounts needed towed from the scene.

Scott was not challenged over the final three circuits with Woodward second, Bud Watson third, McGee fourth, and Leonard Enos fifth.

Defending Crate Late Model champion Damien Bidwell brought the 21 car field to the green with Dave Shagla outside. Bidwell wasted no time opening a lead while Shagla had defended his spot from Doug Ricotta and Matt Harvey, with Harvey getting by Ricotta with four laps complete.

At five laps in, Ryan Scott got sideways coming out of turn four, gathering up the cars of Joe Buccola, Bruce Hordusky and Ward Schell. Hordusky and Schell suffered heavy damage in the incident. Scott headed to the pit, but Buccola was able to continue but experience a flat tire before the race was restarted.

Just as the leaders crossed the line at the end of the first lap under green Shagla spun in front of the field, involving several cars, including Zack Carley and Jason Genco. Scott Gurdak came to second at lap seven. After another restart Gurdak was challenging for the lead. A four-car mess on the back straight at eight complete further reduced the field. Using the high line in turns one and two then switching to the low side in three and four ,Gurdak was leading when the halfway signal was given. Another multi-car incident, this time involving six cars, slowed the race after Matt Harvey spun coming out of turn four at lap 18. Justin Smith got by Bidwell after green again flew.

Harvey got by Bidwell with three to go, but fell back to fourth at the end as Bidwell blasted back by with one to go and then came by Smith on the final straight. The top five were Gurdak, Bidwell, Smith, Harvey, and Doug Ricotta

Pole-sitter Bump Hedman led lap one of the Super Late Model feature with outside front row starter David Scott leading the first time by the flag. Chris Hackett spun in turn four of the third lap, bringing yellow over the event.

After green, Scott went back to the front with Hedman second and two-time champion Dutch Davies third. Scott Gurdak and Pete Alspaugh got together on the front straight and slid into the infield at lap six. Darrell Bossard got by Davies at 10 laps complete. Tenth-starting Chub Frank came to fourth at 16 laps.

The top five at the checkers were Scott, Hedman, Bossard, Frank, and Davies. The top three were all second-generation drivers.

Travis Darling started on the pole for the Super Challenger feature and led the early laps with point-leader Casey Burch glued to his rear bumper. Burch finally made the pass work on lap four. The car of Preston Matve caught on fire, stopping the race with just two laps remaining.

Keith beat Darling to the finish for second as Burch won his fifth of the season.

John Cline Jr. and Ryan Scott were on the front row for the second Limited Late feature and Scott was the first back to the line. Cline was second with Steve Kania third and Jake Finnerty fourth. Kania made it by Cline and the end of lap five to begin an chase down Scott who led by half a straight.

The race stayed green through the halfway point with Scott catching the rear of the field and Finnerty in third behind second-running Kania. Kania was slowly closing the gap with Scott and trailed by 10 car lengths with seven laps remaining. Finnerty was a distant third.

A lap car slowed the leader allowing Kania to close within three car lengths with two laps to go. Kania tried the high side as Scott ran low. On the final lap Kania just came up two car lengths short as Scott took the checkers for his third win of the season.

Guy Adams and Paul Nelson led the Street Stocks to the green for their feature race. Jason Covey, Mark Ramsey and Rodney Tomes were left stalled in the exit of turn two after several cars came together on lap two for the first caution of the event. A 14-car incident just in before the flag stand on the restart collected Adams, Darrell Greene, John Britt, Elaine Best, Cassi Rockwell, Dan Scharf, Mark Thompson and Brian Mohawk were all involved.

Nelson and Brian Crandall were side by side for the lead on the restart with Crandall winning out on lap three just before Victor Earle Jr. brought out the third caution with a spin in turn two. A lap-five caution involved several cars again including Thomson, Bert Chapel, Eric Harvey and Ramsey. It was Crandall, Gary Fisher and Nelson after the single file restart. Jeremy Williams was third.

Just past the halfway mark, Greene spun in turn four for caution five. Chris Couchenour tangled with Nelson as the fought for the third spot bringing out the sixth caution. As the leaders took the two to go signal Earle lost the handle in turn four for caution seven. Crandall took the white five car lengths ahead of Fisher and finished the same for his third of the season.

Mike Murray led the first lap of the Super Sportsman feature. Brent Crandall was second with Jim Kibbe third. Point leader Dan Nocero Jr. was fourth and Mike Kosinski fifth. Jim Kibbe took control as the race neared the half way point as Murray the early leader slipped to fourth. A lap-13 spin brought out the first yellow of the race. Jim Kibbe, Crandall, Murray, Kosinski and Ron Burgun were the leaders for the restart.

The red flag flew for Mike Kibbe who had made hard contact with the turn one wall, but Kibbe surprised the crowd as he was able to continue the race. On the restart Crandall spun coming out of turn two for yellow No. 3 putting Kosinski second and Murray third. Jim Kibbe out ran Kosinski on the final circuit for his third win.
