Rotary?Club Honors Ludwigs With?Paul Harris Fellow Awards
The Rotary Club of Jamestown honored Kathy and Chuck Ludwig with Paul Harris Fellow Awards at the club’s recent recognition dinner.
The Paul Harris Fellowship is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary with three business associates in Chicago in 1905. The fellowship was established in his honor in 1957 to express appreciation for a contribution of $1,000 to the humanitarian and educational programs of The Rotary Foundation. Those programs include an array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding. Foundation programs provided educational opportunities, food, potable water, health care, immunizations and shelter for millions of persons. These activities are funded, implemented and managed by Rotarians around the globe. Rotarians can also designate another person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives and mission of The Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace.
Bill Tucker, president of the local club, told the group that none of the programs the club underwrites or supports would be possible without the tremendous largess of its members and the community who support the fundraising efforts of the club through its golf tournament and charity auction.
Chuck and Kathy Ludwig have conducted the club’s auction since its beginning in 1986 when only men were allowed and Mrs. Ludwig and their staff member Mabel Lewis were allowed to “work” the auction the following year. The auctions have raised more than $400,000 over the years and allowed the club to do much good work in the local and global communities.
The Ludwigs have been together since attending Jamestown High School and eventually started their own auction business. Chuck Ludwig was a member of the Jamestown Rotary when the auction started and he and several other members went on to start the Greater Jamestown AM Rotary, where Ludwig is responsible for starting that club’s very successful Buffalo Bills fundraiser. Chuck Ludwig was honored for his work in 1988 with a Paul Harris Fellow and then received a second fellowship award for his community auction work in 1999.
The Ludwigs are in the process of scaling back their business, Ludwig Auction & Realty Co., and recently held a huge auction to liquidate their warehouse at 15 Cross St., Falconer.
The Rotary Club of Jamestown has decided to discontinue their annual charity auction but not without bestowing the honor of Paul Harris Fellow on both Kathy and Chuck Ludwig for their work in the community.
