Let’s Do Lunch

LAKEWOOD – An established Chautauqua Avenue restaurant has expanded its menu to include lunch.

Last month, the Scallion Bistro, 60 Chautauqua Ave., Lakewood, started serving a variety of lunch items from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Ryan Thayer, co-owner with Derrick Nickerson, said the casual fine dining restaurant offers a selection of entrees most people don’t take the time to enjoy for lunch.

“People need to get out of their McDonald’s box and broaden their horizon,” Thayer said. “Here you will find something not everyone is doing. It is a nicer lunch but we still have burgers and sandwiches. The hamburgers come from New York City, and it is a short rib and brisket mix.”

Now that the restaurant serves lunch, Nickerson said there has been no changes to the dinner menu at Scallion Bistro. He said they still have a summer and winter menu with several entrees. Dinners are served from 5-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 5-10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sunday.

The change to offer lunch is not the only one for the restaurant. Nickerson and Thayer are also the new owners, even though they have been working at the restaurant for years. They became the new owners on June 1 when they purchased the business from Thayer’s mother, Sandy, who was looking to retire.

“The business was on the market for about a year. We would joke about owning a restaurant. We’ve worked together for many years. We’ve known each other for 25 years,” Thayer said. “Then one day we said, ‘Lets go for it.’ So far, we’ve been doing well.”

Nickerson said it isn’t everyday you can buy a business already opened and doing well.

“The restaurant has been successful, and it is rare to find an established business up for sale. That is why we jumped at the opportunity,” he said.

Nickerson said his favorite part of being a restaurant owner is the people.

“I enjoy the social aspect. I like meeting new people. I like making them happy,” he said.

Thayer added he wanted the restaurant so he could continue working in the kitchen.

“I enjoy creating new things. For me, I like cooking,” he said. “I love food. I love really good food.”

Nickerson said he hopes more people will travel from the Jamestown area to Chautauqua Avenue to try a new experience at the Scallion Bistro.

“This is a nice little historic district down here, and it is near the water,” he said.
