City Woman Dies In Fourth Of July Thruway Accident

HAMBURG – A city woman died following a Thursday evening accident on the New York State Thruway.

State Police say a 2003 Chevrolet Blazer being driven by Kimberly Malone of Jamestown was traveling westbound on I-90 near Exit 57 at 5:50 p.m. when it drifted onto the left shoulder and struck a delineator. Malone overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle causing it to skid off the highway and overturn, landing on its roof in the center median.

Debbie Smith, a front-seat passenger, also of Jamestown, was ejected from the vehicle and received treatment for a broken leg and pelvis at the scene. Malone sustained an arm injury.

Both Malone and Smith were taken to Erie County Medical Center with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Upon further examination, it was determined that Smith had sustained severe internal injuries and she passed away later that evening.

No charges have been filed at this time.
