Alfonso S. “Al” Smeragliuolo

Alfonso S. “Al” Smeragliuolo, 82, of Jamestown, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, in WCA Hospital.

He was born April 26, 1931, in Jamestown, the son of the late Pasquale and Virginia Fiorentino Smeragliuolo. He was a 1949 graduate of Jamestown High School and a 1958 graduate of Fredonia State College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54.

In 1992 Al retired from Panama Central School. During his 34-year tenure as Panama Central School’s instrumental music director, he was also vice principal and acting principal. Al was a member of 221st Army Band (1952-54), Jamestown Municipal Band for 59 years and band manager for the last several years, Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, War Vets, St. John/ Holy Apostles Parish, officer in Holy Name Society at Holy Apostles Parish and Eucharistic minister for 30 years at Holy Apostles. He was a judge for NYSSMA festivals for many years, and election inspector for the Board of Elections. In his many years of retirement, he was an adventuresome and spontaneous traveler who shared his time, talents and treasure with family and friends to their delight. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved family gatherings and teaching music.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Ann Nalbone Smeragliuolo, whom he married Sept. 15, 1951; a daughter, Debbie (Mike Allen) Smeragliuolo of Jamestown; son, Dan Smeragliuolo of Baltimore, Md.; daughter, Diane Smeragliuolo of Boca Raton, Fla.; a brother, Patsy (Beverly) Smeragliuolo of Jamestown; a granddaughter, Chrissy Servis of Jamestown; a grandson, Adam Parson of Baltimore, Md.; grandson, Jay (Stephanie) Servis of Northeast, Pa.; a granddaughter, Anna Smeragliuolo of New York City; and seven great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by a son, David; and two brothers: Anthony and Frank.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, in St. John/Holy Apostles Parish. The Rev. Dennis Mende, pastor, will be celebrant. Entombment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Mausoleum.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in the Migliore Funeral Home where a Christian wake service will be conducted at 1:45 p.m.
