JCC?Honors 45 Area High School Students

Jamestown Community College recently honored 45 area high school students from throughout southwestern New York as the 2013 students of the year in the College Connections program.

In selecting the students of the year, schools were asked to consider College Connections participants who had embraced the challenges of completing college level work while in high school and demonstrated resourcefulness, integrity, and dedication.

College Connections, JCC’s concurrent enrollment program with regional high schools, is accredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships. Through the College Connections program, JCC offers courses to over 1500 students in 35 high schools throughout the JCC service area. Eligible students may choose courses from among 27 different disciplines with business, English, history, and math among the largest programs.

Benton Swanson, senior, Maple Grove; Sarah Knieser, junior, and Michael Materna, senior, Olean; Benjamin Taylor, junior, and Jennifer Merchant, senior, Panama; Ellen Bossert, junior, and Mary Hinz, senior, Portville; Zachary Jackson, junior, and Adam Ditcher, senior, Randolph; Courtney Yehl, junior, and Kyler Whitcomb, senior, Salamanca; Reed Benjamin, senior, Scio; Carol Pelz, junior, Silver Creek; Howard Boutelle III, junior, and Andrew Lewis, senior, Southwestern; Lisa Reed, senior, West Valley; and Mackenzi Habig, junior, and Rebecca Herr, senior, Westfield.

In celebration of the award, JCC hosted students and their guests at receptions on both the Jamestown and Olean campuses. Students were awarded a gift from the college and had an opportunity to meet with JCC administrators.

“This year’s recipients represent the kind of students College Connections targets,” said Maria Kindberg, College Connections director. “They are dedicated students who display a strong work ethic and an appreciation of higher education. They have excelled in both their high school and JCC courses, are involved in school activities, and are active in their communities. I am confident they will continue to strive for and achieve excellence.”
