Eastside YMCA, Greater Jamestown AM Rotary Visit Education Village

About 30 Eastside YMCA children in kindergarten through fourth grades and eight members of the Greater Jamestown AM Rotary recently toured the Chautauqua Children’s Safety Education Village.

The Chautauqua Children’s Safety Education Village village is complete with paved roads, street signs, railway crossing and 26 child-sized buildings all donated by area businesses and clubs. The Rotary Pavilion where the children and the Rotarians had their picnic lunch was sponsored by another Chautauqua County Rotary club, the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville.

After lunch, the children and Rotarians went through fire training and were taught how to identify fire hazards, how and when to make a 911 call and how to escape from a burning building. Then they learned about bike and traffic safety and the kids got to drive some awesome pint-sized cars.

“First of all I would like to thank you all very much for keeping the Eastside Y participants in your hearts and inviting them to come spend the day with you at the Safety Village,” said Rhonda Caudill, Eastide Y office manager. “They all had a blast! The food was great, the lessons were fun and the company was exceptional. It was really fun to watch their faces during the fire safety course and see their excitement when there was smoke in the kitchen or when they touched the warm door. They loved climbing out the window too. It was a bit scary for staff when the kindergarten, first- and second-graders got behind the wheel of the battery operated cars. We feel for the parents of these children when they start teaching them to drive. They seem to start getting the hang of it after a little while though and no one was injured so it turned out well. The trip to the Safety Village was the highlight of our After School season! We look forward to doing more with you over the summer.”
