Jamestown School Board Hierarchy Remains Unchanged

There will be no change in leadership for the Jamestown Public School District Board of Education in 2013-14.

On Tuesday, the board voted to re-elect Joseph DiMaio and Laurel Lucas as president and vice president, respectively, for the second consecutive year. DiMaio was not in attendance for the district’s reorganizational meeting, but Lucas was. After the meeting, she said it will be an interesting year for the district. First, she said the board will have to continue working to meet the challenge of providing a quality education to Jamestown students, but also being fiscally responsible to the taxpayers. Secondly, with a new superintendent starting prior to the new school year, the board will have to adjust to working with a new district leader. In June, Tim Mains was selected to be the next district superintendent, taking over for retiring Daniel Kathman.

“I’m very glad Joe and I were re-elected. We work well together as a team,” she said. “I like working with the board, and I enjoy working with Joe.”

In other board business, Kathman discussed the district’s policy book. He said BOCES has a management service for the policy book for the district. He said the district gets monthly updates on new board policies. Also, the updates include the deletion or the combining of policies. Kathman said it has been awhile since the district considered some of the policy recommendations from the management service. He said the board should update its policy book prior to Mains becoming the new superintendent.

Kathman said he sent the recommended policy updates to administrators to make the decision on what ones to consider. Kathman presented the board with the policy book with the new recommendations on Tuesday. He said the board has two weeks to review the recommendations. They will be asked at the board’s next meeting to vote on whether to accept the new policy book.
