Cruise In, Parade Winners Announced

CHERRY CREEK – Amid torrential downpours, intermittently sunny skies and cooler than usual temperatures, the annual Independence Day celebration was held this past weekend in Cherry Creek.

Friday evening, following a heavy rain which actually caused event officials to cancel the Classic Car Cruise In, the showmen began to arrive in their classics, and the event went off as planned. With a marked decrease in the number of cars from the previous year, 29 cars were shown and the People’s Choice Award for the car in the show was awarded to Dave Hall and his 1967 GTO. Hall has owned the car for 18 years, but has only shown it for the past four years and only in Cherry Creek.

“It takes a while to restore one of these,” he said.

Last year’s winner, Doug Merrill, tied for second place this year with Don Steward, both of whom received plaques for their efforts.

The weather didn’t look at all encouraging Saturday morning as the day’s festivities began. But sunny skies prevailed and the pie contest, parade, Little Miss and Mr. Cherry Creek contest, and live auction were held without incident.

Winning the title of Little Mr. Cherry Creek was Preston Arce, 5, son of Amando and Jennifer Arce of Cherry Creek. Receiving the crown of Little Miss Cherry Creek was Alexis Giles, 5, daughter of Melissa Hanner of Cherry Creek.
