Bracey Receives YMCA Hall Of Fame Award

At the Jamestown Area YMCA’s annual meeting held recently, Daniel Bracey was recognized with the YMCA Camp Onyahsa Hall of Fame Award in honor of 18-plus years of ongoing support and continued dedication to YMCA Camp Onyahsa.

The award was presented by Jon O’Brian, YMCA Camp Onyahsa director, at the “Bring On Summer” themed evening.

Bracey went to YMCA Camp Onyahsa as a kid on a scholarship and started on staff in 1974.

He was the kitchen supervisor until he married his wife Elizabeth in 1983. In addition to receiving his lifeguard and CPR/First Aid certification at camp, Bracey was an avid water skier with his best friend Bill Thomas.

Then, he brought his entire family back in 1994, when he served as program director. The family stayed for the next five years.

Bracey was also involved with the Indian Guides program with his children which included a sleepover at the Navel Park in Buffalo with the rest of the gang.

Bracey served as the weekend director for a couple of years and also volunteered his time as the Thursday night cook for a few more years.

He joined the YMCA Camp Committee where he assisted with the annual dinner dance and was elected to the YMCA board of directors in 2008. He also chaired the membership and marketing committee at the Y.

Along with his wife and three children, Bracey was involved with the Jamestown YMCA Jets swim team for a period of 15 years.

Bracey resides in Jamestown and is the principal at Bush Elementary School. He has three children, Dan Jr., Ben and Emily.
