Child Abuser Sentenced

ERIE, Pa. – A former Ashville resident has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for sexually exploiting children in Pennsylvania.

David M. Lopus, 42, was sentenced Wednesday in Federal Court by U.S. District Judge Sean J. McLaughlin to 252 months in prison and lifetime post-release supervision.

According to attorney David J. Hickton, representing the U.S. Department of Justice, Lopus traveled from New York to Pennsylvania on multiple occasions to engage in illicit sexual conduct with minor females as young as 8 years old.

Assistant U.S. attorney Christian A. Trabold prosecuted the case against Lopus on behalf of the government.

Hickton, in a press release, commended the FBI, Pennsylvania State Police, Conewango Township Police Department, Corry Police Department and City of Warren Police Department in the investigation.

The case, Hickton said, was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
