JHS Announces Commencement Speaker

Raymond Fashano, a member of the Jamestown High School class of 1966, is this year’s JHS commencement speaker.

Fashano began his 35-year educational career as a biology teacher at Jamestown High School and retired as Jamestown Public Schools’ superintendent in 2008. He was named Jamestown superintendent in 1999, bringing with him more than 20 years of experience administrating and instructing faculty and youth in school systems, organizing sports at the high school and collegiate levels, and providing educational technology experience in the private sector.

“I was very pleased to learn that the students had selected Mr. Fashano to be this year’s commencement speaker,” said Mike McElrath, JHS principal. “Mr. Fashano has done so much for our schools and our community, and he is an excellent example of the merits of hard work. I have always found the messages in his speeches to be both positive and inspiring.”

Under Fashano’s leadership, Jamestown Public Schools experienced an educational renaissance with numerous projects and initiatives. Fashano oversaw three capital project referendums, which renovated or added on to every school building in the district, giving students and staff better learning facilities and creating a new, permanent administration building. He directed the completion of a district-wide fiber optics network to infuse technology into the district including: email, analog and digital streaming video, new telephone system for every room, laptops for teachers’ educational use, Parent Portal, WNY network connections, and increasing the number of computers available district-wide for student learning. Fashano emphasized a greater focus on student achievement and formed the JHS School-Based Health Center and JHS Technology Academy.

“I believe the opportunity to speak at the class of 2013 graduation is a great professional honor,” said Fashano. “It is the culmination of my professional career since I was a product of Jamestown Public Schools and had the honor of being its superintendent for nine years.”

Fashano has received numerous awards and honors including E-School’s Tech Savvy Superintendent’s Award as a finalist in 2006. He was also featured in District Administrator magazine in 2007 in an article entitled “Private Sector Technology Experience Applied to a School District.”

Fashano has been actively involved in the local community. He is currently a board member with the Sheldon Foundation. He is the director of the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation and managing member of the Downtown Jamestown Revitalization, LCC. He was the director of the Downtown Jamestown Development Corporation and also served as past president. Fashano served on the New York State Small Cities Association and as its vice president from 2007-08, was a consultant for Silver Creek Central Schools recent construction project and an interim assistant superintendent of BOCES. He currently serves as executive director of the Chautauqua County School Boards Association.

Fashano holds a bachelor’s and master’s degrees and his School Administration Certificate from SUNY Fredonia. He currently lives in the Jamestown School District with his wife, Jeanine. He has a daughter, Amy, who is a lawyer in Boston and two stepsons, Marty, a math teacher at Jamestown High School, and Dean who is also employed locally.
