Difference Makers

MAYVILLE – Firefighters, emergency medical personnel and citizens were recognized recently at the Chautauqua County Fire Chiefs Association’s 63rd annual banquet.

The ceremony was held at the county Office of Emergency Services in Mayville.

Receiving firefighter of the year awards were Jack Knowlton, Waldo Haskins, Justin Burke, Joshua Burke and John Burke.

According to Julius Leone, Chautauqua County fire coordinator, the firefighters were recognized for their role in rescuing a couple from their vehicle, which was in rising water in Stockton on Jan. 30.

Mike Valvo and Mike Przybycien received the emergency medical technicians of the year award. Both EMTs had given many years of service to the county as first responders and instructors, Leone said.

James Muscato and Douglas Kennedy were honored as citizens of the year during the banquet for rescuing two people from a burning building on Jan. 5 in Westfield.

Also receiving an award for citizen of the year was Brandon Sweet, who on July 15 assisted family members after their house exploded.
