Falconer Public Library Announces Summer Events

FALCONER – The Falconer Public Library recently announced its summer events.

Sixth-grade Selborne classes from Falconer Central School arrived June 4 to begin their 20th year of celebrating Selborne.

Classes of 30 students arrive at the library at 8:15 to receive worksheets to put on their clipboards. Sue Seamans, library manager, welcomes them to the library and to a one-hour lecture that includes her presentation of Falconer Public Library history and services, guest speakers Brenda Cavallaro, Falconer historian, who talked about the history of the Cash grocery store/Quality Markets; and Gloria Anderson, village clerk, who presents the record books and a tour of the village offices. Laurie Becker, story hour director, talks to the students about the importance of early reading, and Betty Palmer, library clerk helps Seamans show historical photos. The classes continue Tuesday, June 11.

The library’s Summer Reading Club begins June 24. “Be A Smart Cookie: Read” is the theme for this year. It focuses on reading 15 minutes a day for five days a week. Book logs and information sheets are available at the library. There is no pre-registration. It lasts for five weeks. Anyone can join for a week, or the whole five weeks. It is a flexible club. A prize jar filled with candy is at the front desk at the beginning of each week. For five weeks, participants can guess on the contents of the jar as a math skill winner will then be determined, and contents go to the winner each week.

Summer band concerts are held on Thursday nights in July, except July 4, until Aug. 1 this year. Kiwanis offers refreshments. There is different live music every week. Attendees need to bring a lawn chair. This year, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation is helping to support the concerts as part of its own 35th anniversary.

The annual book sale, the library’s only fundraiser, is the second week in August. This year, the 66th book sale will be Aug. 8-9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the bag sale on Friday.
