Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Thumbs up to all the area high school athletes whose seasons are still ongoing. The Fredonia and Pine Valley baseball teams have won Section 6 championships while Frewsburg and Cassadaga will face off for the Section 6, Class C softball championship at 3 p.m. today at the Martin Road Sports Complex in Jamestown. Forestville and Pine Valley will play for the Class D softball title at 4 p.m. today at the Martin Road complex while Falconer will play Eden at 5 p.m. in West Seneca for the Class B softball title. Marissa DelMonaco of Southwestern and Kirstie Hanson of Jamestown qualified for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association golf championship from June 7-9. Track and field athletes will compete this weekend at the Section 6 championships, with dozens of area athletes slated to compete.

Thumbs down to a bill approved by the state Assembly that would require all boaters to take a boater safety course before hitting the water, even if the boater had already taken safety courses in other states. Assemblywoman Sandy Galef, D-Ossining, sponsored the legislation in the state Assembly, and some in the New York City area have expressed concern over having untrained boaters on the water in heavy commercial boating areas. That is a legitimate concern that might be better addressed locally than with a statewide law. There are accidents on area lakes every summer, but we are unsure how many in our area are caused by people not knowing basic boating rules. It would be useful information to have before passing a law that could severely impact tourism in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties.

Thumbs up to the Ellicott Town Board for changing its meeting time. The board hasn’t had a member of the public at a meeting for about six months, according to Cecil Miller, town supervisor. Starting Monday, the board will meet at 6 p.m. We’re unsure if moving the meeting time will result in more people attending, but commend the board for realizing it needed to change something to foster more participation.
