Looking For Busti Veterans

BUSTI – The Busti Hamlet Development Group is trying to find all current and former Busti residents who served in the armed forces with an invitation to take part in the Busti community’s annual Memorial Day parade on Monday.

The event will form up at 8:30 a.m. at the former New Beginnings Restaurant on Sugar Grove Road, with the parade stepping off at 9 a.m.

Veterans are welcome to come in regulation uniform or street clothes, with or without their ribbons, medals and awards.

Those who want to walk can walk the parade route, but a flat bed float will be provided. The hamlet’s most senior veterans will be chauffeured in one of the parade’s antique cars.

After the memorial service the Busti gazebo, all are invited to breakfast at the Busti Fire Department.

Co-organizers Steve Johnson and Joe Siperek, both veterans themselves, said they know from their own experiences how difficult it is for a veteran to be thrust into a public event. Many choose not to join in celebrations which tend to focus on their veteran status.

To know how many veterans to prepare for, veterans interested in participating are asked to call Johnson, a former U.S. Marine, at 484-1589, or Siperek, a former U.S. Army soldier, at 763-6963. Any veteran who shows up will be included.

A shuttle will be provided to return parade participants to their parked cars after the parade, after the memorial service and after breakfast.
